Chris Rubino

Director, Cinematographer, Editor

Produced for Gestalten
Chris Rubino wears many hats, but perhaps the biggest project the New York City-based designer tackled was Manhattan's Distrikt Hotel, which opened in February 2010. Sourcing from more than 10,000 photographs, the artist created bold digital collages – 31 of them, one for each elevator lobby – that also revealed a conceptual brilliance. Guests can whiz 30 floors "uptown" in a lift that springs from the Financial District to Harlem in a matter of seconds; from the Wall Street Bull to the Apollo Theater.

It's one project of many for the 2006 ADC Young Gun winner, whose enviable list of clients includes The New York Times, Banana Republic and Urban Outfitters. We swing by Rubino's Brooklyn studio for a chat about digital layering, comic books and how screen-printing is just an approximation of life.

Marvin Watches

Director, Cinematographer, Editor

Produced for Cool Hunting:
We traveled to beautiful Neuchâtel, Switzerland to learn the history of Marvin Watches, a brand celebrating it's 160th birthday and its re-introduction to consumers. Once one of the largest watchmakers in Switzerland the company suffered at the end of the last century, and was resurrected by husband and wife team Cécile and Jean-Daniel Maye eight years ago. Their hard work has paid off, and Marvin Watches was just launched in the U.S. and most European markets in October 2010.

Cécile shares Marvin's story and walks us through the year-long process of making a watch. Celebrated watch designer Sébastian Perret has been instrumental in Marvin's renaissance, and he shares his process for creating a watch from sketch to prototype.

While we were at Marvin we worked with Cécile and Sébastien to design our "Toujours Plus" Malton 160 Cushion, a Cool Hunting Edition collaboration.

Olaf Breuning

Director, Cinematographer, Editor

Produced for Cool Hunting:
In honor of Swiss artist Olaf Breuning's inclusion in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, this video visits his Manhattan studio. In the midst of working on his two-part installation for the show, Olaf takes the time to explain his inspiration and thinking behind his mini army made of readymade objects and a recreation of a 1932 photograph. There's also plenty of examples of his other playfully absurd photographs, videos and sculptures as well as a few comments about how materials spark his creativity, pop culture and the differences of working out of a place of pleasure vs. struggle.
